In the wake of the IPL controversy and subsequent order of the Supreme Court for Narayanaswami Srinivasan to step down, former Indian skipper and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar’s name has been proposedas the new chief of BCCI in the interim period. Gavaskar’s name for the prime position at the Board of Control for Cricket in India has been suggested by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court has reasoned that Gavaskar or another well respected former cricketer of his standard should be entrusted with this responsibility.

Gavaskar has said that if the higher authorities believe he would be able to carry out the job, he would be more than willing to fill in. His stint as an opening batsma

n has taught him to be prepared for all situations.

As for opining about N. Srinivasan, he has said that he is no legal expert and hence would leave the matter at the hands of the Supreme Court. Gavaskar has also claimed that he would be willing to terminate his contract with the BCCI as commentator if he is asked to take up the top job.

When questioned about the ban on Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings from playing in the IPL, Sunny Gavaskar has said that banning two franchises from participation will not remove corruption from cricket. Fans of CSK would be disappointed. Banning the IPL would not help either. When issues of spot fixing cropped up in 1999-00, no one asked for a ban on test cricket. There is no assurance that strictest measures would eliminate corruption from the system.

Madan Mitra, sports minister of West Bengal has said that Sourav Ganguly, former Indian skipper should be offered the post of BCCI chief. He has made this statement right after the Supreme Court put forth the name of legend Gavaskar for replacing N. Srinivasan.

Mitra has said that Sourav signifies energy, youth and corruption free cricket. The people of Bengal could take to the streets to vouch for Ganguly’s credentials for the post, according to him. He is a symbol of integrity and not for once did his name come up for spot fixing or betting, claimed Mitra at a press meet.

Even though Gavaskar is ready to face the challenge, another erstwhile Indian captain, Bishan Singh Bedi has suggested that ShashankManohar, former chief of BCCI should take over Srinivasan’s duties.

By keeping away Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings from IPL 7, losses worth Rs 9000 crore would be incurred. On the other hand, banning the IPL would lead to an even bigger loss at Rs 20,000 crore! It has been estimated that $3.2 billion is generated in a season of IPL, combining various sectors. With the elimination of these two teams, the total number of teams would drop to six and the number of matches to 60 from 34. There would be a drop of 45 percent in the number of matches that will be held.

The outcome of this situation is yet to be known. However, it has certainly overshadowed the tension over Friday’s T20 World Cup game where India faces Bangladesh.
